Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) South Africa is seeking a dynamic and motivated Digital Communications Intern to join our Communications team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of digital communications, while supporting the life-saving work of MSF. The successful candidate will report to the Social Media Officer and will provide administrative, writing, editing, graphic design, reporting, and research support.

Responsibilities

As a Digital Communications Intern, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks designed to enhance the digital presence and engagement of MSF South Africa. Your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Content Management:
    • Update and maintain content on the MSF Southern Africa website.
    • Edit articles to ensure accuracy, correct tagging, and the use of quality images.
    • Ensure relevant content is hyperlinked to improve Google search ranking and SEO.
    • Maintain a consistent layout for all articles and optimize website content for improved user experience.
  2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
    • Utilize SEO tools and content management systems, particularly Yoast, for content optimization.
    • Apply SEO best practices and keyword optimization techniques to all web content.
    • Write and edit content with a focus on readability and engagement.
    • Implement linking strategies to enhance site authority and user experience.
  3. Social Media Management:
    • Work closely with the Social Media Officer to help build and manage MSF South Africa’s online communities.
    • Monitor and respond proactively to social media trends.
    • Measure and report on social media activities and develop content for social media channels.
    • Research effective content strategies and test different copy options.
    • Respond to comments and messages on MSF social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
    • Flag urgent or disturbing comments to the Social Media Officer for a planned response.
    • Assist in regularly updating the community management strategy and categorizing queries and responses.
  4. Multimedia Integration:
    • Incorporate multimedia elements effectively into written content to enhance engagement.
    • Develop graphic design skills and apply them in creating engaging digital content.
  5. Analytical and Reporting Skills:
    • Analyze social media and website performance data to inform content strategies.
    • Prepare detailed reports on digital communications activities and their impact.
Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Currently pursuing studies in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a similar field.
  • Good working knowledge of social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Experience in managing social media accounts and a keen interest in developing online communication and marketing tactics.
  • A strong interest in humanitarian issues and a commitment to the mission of MSF.
  • Creative and flexible approach to work, with the ability to work well within a team.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and oral.
  • Ability to balance short-term and long-term responsibilities, work quickly when necessary, and handle high-pressure or breaking-news situations.
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to share knowledge and teach others.
